How is your business priced?

In the payment processing world, there are three basic pricing models. In the diagrams below, you can easily see which plan will cost you more by paying attention to the black section of the bars.

The tiered plan can be dangerous for a merchant because it’s less transparent and allows the processor to bury markups.

Flat Rate

Flat-rates (Square, PayPal) are expensive for the average merchant. It really only makes sense if you are processing less than 5k per month.

Interchange Plus

Interchange Plus is the best processing rate plan on the market, and the most transparent with clearly outlined fees and terms.

Cost Components

The rate you pay to process a credit card transaction is a combination of base costs and markups called merchant discount. Think of merchant discount as the markup over cost, which is what the card brands charge everyone.

Markups

The markup over interchange and assessments is the only area where you have the ability to negotiate credit card processing costs. Markups differ significantly from one processor to the next both by amount, pricing model and the types of fees charged. These inconsistencies are why it’s difficult to accurately compare credit card processing on the open market.

Lowest Rates

Now that you have a basic understating of where processing fees come from, you know that the best credit card processor is the one that offers you the lowest markup over interchange and assessments. But you shouldn’t be shopping for the lowest rates. Instead, you should be shopping for the lowest overall markup over cost.
